If you have multiple Gmail accounts there are a few approaches to jumping between accounts without it getting confusing. If you use Chrome you can leverage the People feature to assign a browser window to an account or a “Person”. If you don’t use Chrome but want to still switch between accounts you can use the Gmail multiple sign-in.
Method 1: Chrome’s People feature ^
Chrome comes with the ability to use multiple profiles so you can be logged into more than one Gmail account at a time.
Add a person
- Sign in to Chrome.
- In the upper right corner of the browser window, click the button for the current user. It may show that person’s name, email, or an icon like this
.
- Click Switch Person.
- At the bottom of the window, click Add Person.
Switch between people
- In the upper right corner of the browser window, click the button for the current person.
- Click Switch person.
- Choose the person you want to switch to.
Tip: You can switch more quickly between profiles by right-clicking the button for the current person.
Change a name or picture
Change Name
- In the upper right corner of the browser window, click the button for the current person.
- Click the name under the photo and type a new one.
Change a picture
- In the upper right corner of the browser window, click the button for the current person.
- Hover over the picture and click the camera icon
that appears.
- In the “Edit” dialog, you can choose a new picture.
- Click Save.
Using the Switch between people functionality you switch between you personal Gmail account and your work Gmail account (including any bookmarks, Chrome extensions and chrome themes you have selected)
Method 2: Gmail’s multiple sign-in ^
If you don’t want to manage multiple Google Chrome browser windows and just want to be logged into two or more Gmail accounts you can use the multiple sign-in feature. You can use multiple sign-in to switch between accounts without having to sign out and back in again. For example, if you have one Google Account for personal use and a different Google Account for your church account, you can easily switch between the two within the same browser (like Chrome, Safari or Firefox) using multiple sign-in.
Add your Google Accounts
- Sign in to Gmail.
- Click your profile photo or email address at the top-right corner of the page.
- Click Add account from the drop-down menu.
- Enter the username and password for another account you want to access, and click Sign in.
Switch between accounts
- Click your profile photo or email address at the top right of the page.
- Choose the account you’d like to sign in to.
Ways to tell your accounts apart
You can tell your different accounts apart by the email address associated with them or by setting up the following:
- Use different profile pictures for each of your accounts.
- Choose different Gmail themes for each account to give your inboxes a unique design.
Signing out
When you sign out of any account, you’ll be signed out of all your accounts on that browser. If you want to use multiple sign-in again, follow the steps in the “Add your Google Accounts” section above again.
To sign out of all accounts:
- Go to your Google Account page.
- Click your profile photo or email address at the top right of the page.
- Click Sign out from the drop-down menu.
